چکیده

We present the first simultaneous infrared (IR) and visible spectro-polarimetric observations of a solar internetwork region. The Fe I lines at λ6301.5 Å, λ6302.5 Å, λ15648 Å, and λ15652 Å were observed, with a lag of only 1 min, using highly sensitive spectro-polarimeters operated in two different telescopes (VTT and THEMIS at the Observatorio del Teide). Some 30% of the observed region shows IR and visible Stokes V signals above noise. These polarization signals indicate the presence of kG magnetic field strengths (traced by the visible lines) co-existing with sub-kG fields (traced by the infrared lines). In addition, one quarter of the pixels with signal have visible and IR Stokes V profiles with opposite polarity. We estimate the probability density function of finding each longitudinal magnetic field strength in the region. It has a tail of kG field strengths that accounts for most of the (unsigned) magnetic flux of the region. Subject headings: Sun: magnetic fields – Sun: photosphere

SPINOR is a new spectro-polarimeter that will serve as a facility instrument for the Dunn Solar Telescope at the National Solar Observatory. This instrument is capable of achromatic operation over a very broad range of wavelengths , from ∼400 up to 1600 nm, allowing for the simultaneous observation of several visible and infrared spectral regions with full Stokes polarimetry. Another key featur...

The Intrinsic Dimensionality of Spectro-polarimetric Data

The amount of information available in spectro-polarimetric data is estimated. To this end, the intrinsic dimensionality of the data is inferred with the aid of a recently derived estimator based on nearest-neighbor considerations and obtained applying the principle of maximum likelihood. We show in detail that the estimator correctly captures the intrinsic dimension of artificial datasets with...

High-resolution spectro-polarimetry of a flaring sunspot penumbra

We present simultaneous photospheric and chromospheric observations of the trailing sunspot in NOAA 10904 during a weak flare eruption (GOES magnitude B7.8), obtained with the Swedish Solar Telescope (SST) in La Palma, Canary Islands. High-resolution Ca iiH images show a typical two-ribbon structure that has been hitherto only known for larger flares, and the flare appears in a confined region ...

Quiet Sun Internetwork Magnetic Fields from the Inversion of Hinode Measurements

We analyze Fe I 630 nm observations of the quiet Sun at disk center taken with the spectropolarimeter of the Solar Optical Telescope aboard the Hinode satellite. A significant fraction of the scanned area, including granules, turns out to be covered by magnetic fields. We derive field strength and inclination probability density functions from a Milne-Eddington inversion of the observed Stokes ...

First Light of the Near-infrared Narrow-band Tunable Birefringent Filter at Big Bear Solar Observatory

We discuss a near-infrared (NIR) narrow-band tunable birefringent filter system newly developed by the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). This is one of the first narrow-bandpass NIR filter systems working at 1.56 μm which is used for the observation of the deepest solar photosphere. Four stages of calcite were used to obtain a bandpass of 2.5 Å along with a free spectral range (FSR) of 40 Å. S...
